Team Bio - John Siegel

John Siegel is skipper and helmsman.  John bought a Catalina 22 in 1977 was immediately captivated by sailing.  He began crewing on Santa Cruz 27s in 1979 and became hooked on racing.  He upgraded to a Wylie 28 Hawkfarm in 1981 and began racing that boat on Monterey and San Francisco Bays.  He has been a "racing junkie" ever since, racing on Lasers to Santa Cruz 50s and most everything in between.  Besides countless bay regattas and numerous coastal races, he completed three Pacific Cups and a Transpac.  He owns a Moore 24 (see Team Moorigami) that he races year round.  He also regularly races his Laser in the Lake Tahoe Monday Night Series.

A retired software executive, he and Joy live on Telegraph Hill in San Francisco.  His two grown children are raising families in San Diego.  He is a member of Santa Cruz Yacht Club where he is a Staff Commodore and serves on the Regatta Committee, the SF Bay Windjammers, and the St. Francis Yacht Club where he serves on the Executive Race Committee.  He's currently Chairman of US SAILING's Offshore Committee and sits on their board of directors.  He's also a certified US SAILING Judge and Race Officer.  John was recognized by SCYC as 2003 Yachtsman of the Year, and by the StFYC as 2005 Sailor of the Year.

When not sailing, he spends his time snow skiing, contemplating a return to golf, and procrastinating about piano lessons.
